On January 8, 1986, under owner Fred Sands, KNAC became the first commercial heavyโmetal station in the U.S., launching its iconic โPure Rock 105.5 KNACโ identity.
It built a cult reputation by airing all forms of metalโglam, speed, thrash, progressive, death, and moreโand championing bands like Metallica, Guns Nโ Roses, Megadeth, Pantera, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chainsโoften before they hit mainstream radio.
KNACโs 1,500โ2,100โฏwatt signal was relatively weak, which ironically boosted its underground credibility and cult fandom.
The station famously promoted events like Monsters of Rock at the L.A. Coliseum in 1988, reinforcing its deep ties with the metal community.
